China: 80 percent of the population has been infected with the coronavirus

The possibility of a major resurgence of COVID-19 in China over the next two to three months is unlikely, as 80 percent of the population has been infected, a prominent Chinese government scientist said.

Mass population movements during the Lunar New Year holiday period likely spread the pandemic, increasing the number of infections in some areas. But a new wave of COVID is unlikely to happen in the near future, said Wu Zunyou, chief epidemiologist at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Hundreds of millions of Chinese are traveling across the country for the Lunar New Year holiday, raising fears of a new outbreak in rural areas that are less equipped to deal with major eruptions.

China has passed the peak of COVID patients seeking medical help, the National Health Commission said earlier this week.

As of January 12, almost 60,000 people with COVID-19 have died in hospitals, authorities said. The figure came a month after China unexpectedly abandoned its strict policy of measures, known as zero-Covid.
