The Prime Minister of New Zealand does not regret why she resigned

Jacinda Ardern has said she has "no regrets" about resigning as prime minister of New Zealand - a decision that has shocked her supporters and critics.

A day after declaring she no longer had the energy to lead, Ardern said she had "many kinds of emotions", from sadness to a sense of relief.

Polls have shown that her Labor Party has a tough challenge to win another term in power in the October elections.

Ardern has said she will not publicly endorse any candidate to replace her.

Speaking outside the airport in Napier, Ardern said she "slept well, for the first time in a long time".

On Thursday, she said she is looking forward to spending more time with her family and being close to her daughter, who starts school this year.

Ardern will officially step down on February 7, while the Labor Party will elect a new leader on Sunday.

The new chairman of the party then also becomes the prime minister of the state.

Chris Hipkins, who is currently part of the Government, is considered the most likely candidate to win./REL
