French Minister: The latest strikes cannot harm the economy

The latest strikes being held in France to oppose the Government's plans to raise the retirement age cannot harm the state's economy, French Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire has told Bloomberg television.

"I don't think the strikes will have a very big economic impact on the French economy," said Le Maire at the World Economic Forum in Davos, adding that the French economy is "doing well."

More than a million people marched through French cities on Thursday to oppose President Emmanuel Macron's plans for pension reforms.

Labor unions have called for new protests on January 31, but the government has shown no signs of backing down.

"We strongly believe that this reform is necessary for France. It is the best way to ensure more prosperity for the French people", said Le Maire.

However, he told him that the Government will have an "open" mind regarding the discussions on eventual changes.

The pension reform plan envisages raising the retirement age from 62, which is now, to 64.

The reform must be approved in Parliament, where Macron has lost the majority, but hopes for approval with the support of conservatives./REL
