Japan on high alert for second earthquake

Officials in Japan have warned of a growing risk of a "major" earthquake next week, after a 7.7-magnitude quake struck the northeastern coast, triggering an evacuation order and warnings of 3-meter (10-foot) tsunami waves.

Thousands of people were told to evacuate coastal areas to higher ground after the earthquake struck in waters off Iwate prefecture, 530 km north of the capital Tokyo. The largest tsunami waves were 80 cm high. Tsunami warnings and advisories were lifted hours after the quake on Monday.

But Japan's meteorological agency has warned that earthquakes "causing even stronger tremors" could occur next week, producing larger waves. Authorities said the risk of a quake measuring 8.0 or higher was "relatively higher than during normal times." People in Japan are still reeling from memories of a powerful earthquake in 2011 that triggered a tsunami that killed more than 18,000 people and caused a meltdown at the Fukushima nuclear power plant.

After Monday's undersea earthquake, recorded at a depth of 10 km, residents in areas closest to the epicenter - on Japan's main island of Honshu and the northern region of Hokkaido - were issued warnings of possible larger waves. Tremors were felt as far away as Tokyo.

Japan's precarious location on the Ring of Fire means it experiences around 1,500 earthquakes a year and accounts for 10% of earthquakes of magnitude 6.0 or higher worldwide./CNA
