Former South Korean president faces death penalty in sedition trial

A South Korean court is expected to deliver its verdict in the sedition trial of ousted president Yoon Suk Yeol.

Prosecutors have sought the death penalty, saying Yoon was the mastermind behind the December 2024 move to impose military rule.

A death sentence actually means life imprisonment because South Korea no longer executes prisoners.

Yoon's order lasted only six hours, but it shocked the country - paralyzing what was left of the government and costing his party the next election.

It also polarized South Korea, and that is evident today, as his supporters gather to protest outside the court.

Yoon is already serving a prison sentence for another conviction related to the failed martial law order. He still faces two more trials./ CNA
