Leaders in Iran are considering the possibility of imposing a tax on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, a lawmaker said.
Since the start of the US and Israeli airstrikes, Iran has maintained a firm grip on the critical waterway for global oil and liquefied natural gas transportation.
The blockade against ships it considers to be serving hostile countries has caused energy prices to rise worldwide.
Washington has called on allies to try to counter the blockade, but its demands have gone unanswered. According to DW, the tax would allow more fuel to pass through, while allowing Tehran to take advantage of the situation.
A spokesman for Iran's new supreme leader said this could effectively act as a sanction against the West, which has long imposed sanctions on Iran. /CNA
