Vance plans visit to Hungary in show of support for Orban

Reuters reports that US Vice President JD Vance plans to visit Hungary in the coming days in a show of support for Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who faces tough elections next month, two sources familiar with the matter said on Wednesday.

The trip would come after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio traveled to Budapest in February to publicly support Orban ahead of his toughest re-election battle since taking power in 2010. Opinion polls show him at a disadvantage in the final month before the April 12 vote.

The exact timing of Vance's visit was not immediately clear and his plans could change, the sources warned, as top officials may choose to remain in Washington as the US-Israeli air war against Iran continues. President Donald Trump said he is postponing his trip to China because of the war.

Orban, one of Trump's closest allies in Europe, has long been at odds with the EU on a range of issues, including Ukraine. Defying Brussels, he has maintained cordial ties with Moscow, refuses to send weapons to Ukraine and says Kiev can never join the EU.

Trump endorsed Orban last month, calling him "a truly strong and powerful leader" in a social media post, and many on the American far right consider him a role model for Trump's tough immigration policies and support for Christian conservatism.

Trump has supported conservative leaders around the world, most recently endorsing Javier Milei of Argentina and Sanae Takaichi of Japan.

Vance has emerged as a powerful vice president, often instrumental and deeply involved in foreign policy issues. He is also a leading candidate to succeed Trump in 2028.

Rubio said during his trip to Hungary that Orban's leadership was essential to U.S. interests, but suggested that continued close ties depended on Orban's reelection. He also indicated that Washington would be willing to help Budapest financially if necessary./CNA, translated by Reuters
