US: China not planning an invasion of Taiwan until 2027

According to an assessment by the United States intelligence community, China is not currently planning to invade Taiwan by force until 2027. This assessment is a clear shift compared to previous concerns about a possible use-of-force scenario in this period.

Washington believes that Beijing is trying to achieve control over Taiwan without using force, as much as possible.

This assessment comes despite China's military pressure around the island and frequent military exercises in the surrounding sea.

US intelligence says that, although China is developing military capabilities, there is no fixed timetable for a forceful invasion by 2027.

Previous Pentagon reports suggested that China was developing capabilities that could make it militarily capable of a campaign against Taiwan by 2027, but this is not a clear plan or set timeline. /CNA
