Situation in Hormuz/Merz: We will intervene where we have competence

Germany is trying to maintain a careful diplomatic balance with US President Donald Trump as tensions over war with Iran spread across Europe.

Ahead of this week's European Union summit, Chancellor Friedrich Merz reiterated that Germany and its European allies would not join the US-Israeli military effort. However, he left open the possibility that Berlin could help secure the Strait of Hormuz after the conflict ends.

"If the conditions are right, we will not rule out a discussion on freedom of navigation after the war is over... We will intervene where we have national competence and where we see room for action," Merz declared.

Meanwhile, frustration has grown in Europe after the US took military action without consulting its allies. “Washington did not consult us. We would have advised against it,” the German chancellor said.

The EU summit, originally planned to focus on long-overdue economic reforms, is now expected to be dominated by energy, trade and the consequences of the unilateral US decision. Merz has called on European partners to support reforms to restore Europe's weight on the international stage.

"We no longer want to underestimate ourselves. We are identifying our interests and the instruments of power to protect them," he told German lawmakers.

However, Europe remains dependent on Washington, especially in terms of trade and the Ukraine issue. “I expect the customs agreement between Europe and the United States to enter into force soon,” Merz added.

Regarding Ukraine, the chancellor was emphatic: "This is a matter of security, freedom and peace of the entire transatlantic region... It is about protecting what we proudly call the Free World."
