US President Donald Trump has reacted through a post on Truth Social regarding an Israeli attack on the South Pars gas field in Iran yesterday evening.
In retaliation for that attack, Iran attacked Qatar's Ras Laffan, an industrial zone containing the world's largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) processing plant.
In his strongly worded tweet, Trump said the US “knew nothing” about Israel’s attack and threatened escalation if Iran attacks Qatar again. The US president said that if Iran attacks another innocent country again, the US will blow up the South Pars gas field – the world’s largest.
“Israel, out of anger over what has been happening in the Middle East, has violently attacked a major facility known as the South Pars Gas Field in Iran. A relatively small portion of the entire facility was hit. The United States knew nothing about this particular attack, and the country of Qatar was in no way or shape involved in it, nor did it have any idea that it was going to happen. Unfortunately, Iran did not know this, or any of the relevant facts surrounding the attack on South Pars, and unjustly and unjustly attacked a portion of Qatar’s LNG gas facility. THERE WILL BE NO MORE ATTACKS BY ISRAEL in relation to this extremely important and valuable South Pars Field, unless Iran rashly decides to attack a very innocent country, in this case, Qatar – in which case the United States of America, with or without the assistance or consent of Israel, will massively blow up the entire South Pars Gas Field with a "an amount of force and power that Iran has never seen or witnessed before. I do not want to authorize this level of violence and destruction because of the long term implications it will have on Iran's future, but if Qatar's LNG is attacked again, I will not hesitate to do so ," Trump's post said.
QatarEnergy said several of its LNG facilities were targeted by rocket attacks in the early hours of Thursday, causing significant fires and extensive further damage. It said there were no reported casualties and that emergency response teams were deployed to the site.
Qatar's Foreign Ministry described the Iranian attacks that hit Qatar's Ras Laffan Industrial City as "a dangerous escalation" of the conflict in the Middle East.
The ministry said Qatar reserves its right to respond and will not hesitate to defend its sovereignty. /CNA
