Hungary blocks loan to Ukraine/ Orban: Without oil, there is no money

Hungary, which is blocking a 90 billion euro loan to Ukraine, will not back down until Kiev restores Russian oil supplies through the Druzhba pipeline, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban warned, hours before a European summit to discuss the issue.

"Hungary's position is very simple: we will help Ukraine when we have our oil, which they are blocking. Until then, we cannot support any proposal in favor of the Ukrainians ," Orbán told reporters upon his arrival in Brussels.

In December, Viktor Orban had agreed to provide a 90 billion euro loan to Ukraine, assuring, along with Slovakia and the Czech Republic, that it would not participate.

Kiev urgently needs these resources to finance the war against Russia in 2026 and 2027. But Orban categorically refuses to agree to the procedures for releasing the loan unless he ensures the resumption of the flow of oil through the Druzhba pipeline that runs through Ukraine.

The pipeline was damaged by Russian attacks on January 27, and Budapest accuses Kiev of delaying its restoration work.

"Without oil, there is no money ," Orban warned.

His stance has been condemned by many European leaders who want to put pressure on the Hungarian prime minister, accusing him of not keeping his commitments.

"He is using Ukraine as a weapon in his election campaign and that is not good. We had an agreement," Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said before the start of the European Council. /CNA
