Accused of bribery / Menendez resigns as chairman of the US Senate on Foreign

A veteran US senator has temporarily resigned as chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee as he faces bribery allegations.

It is about the Democratic senator from New Jersey, Robert Menendez.

He and his wife, Nadine Menendez, have been charged by the Manhattan prosecutor's office with accepting bribes.

The indictment relates to alleged corrupt relationships with three businessmen from New Jersey.

According to the Manhattan District Attorney's office, the senator and his wife are accused of accepting thousands of dollars in bribes in exchange for using Mr. Menendez's power and influence as a senator to provide protection and benefits to businessmen and the government of Egypt.

Prosecutors say they took cash, gold bullion, home loan payments, minimum wage payments, a luxury vehicle and other valuables.

Menendez and his wife Nadine, whom the senator married in 2020, face three criminal charges each.

It is not known whether Menendez will run for senator again next year, as the case against him could complicate efforts by Democrats to expand their majority in the 100-member Senate./ CNA
