70-year-old Ugandan woman gives birth to twins

A 70-year-old woman has given birth to twins after in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment, a hospital in Uganda has said, according to the BBC.

Safina Namukwaya gave birth to a boy and a girl by caesarean section at a fertility center in the capital, Kampala. Namukwaya, who is one of the oldest women to have given birth, told local media it was a "miracle".

The hospital congratulated him, saying it is more than a medical success.

Namukwaya told Uganda's Daily Monitor newspaper that her pregnancy had been difficult after her partner abandoned her when he realized she was having twins.

"Men don't like to be told you have more than one child. Since I showed up here, my husband has never shown up," she said.

This is Namukëaya's second birth in three years. She gave birth to a daughter in 2020.

She said she had wanted to have children after being teased for being childless.

"I took care of people's children and watched them grow up and leave me alone. I wondered who would take care of me when I got old," she was quoted as saying.

Women usually go through menopause between the ages of 45 and 55. Fertility declines around this time, but advances in medicine have made it possible for them to be born.

In-vitro fertilization (IVF) is one of several techniques. During the process an egg is removed from a woman's ovaries and fertilized with sperm in a laboratory.

The fertilized egg, called an embryo, then returns to the woman's womb to grow and develop./ CNA
