A US Navy warship in the Red Sea shot down an Iranian-made drone launched from areas controlled by the Houthi movement in Yemen, US Central Command said on Wednesday. This is the latest instance of the US military engaging in defensive action in the region in recent weeks.

Washington remains on alert for the activities of Iran-backed groups as regional tensions rise amid the conflict between Israel and Hamas. The United States is trying to ensure that the conflict does not spread to the region.

The drone was shot down by the destroyer Carney, the United States Central Command said on the X social network.

"Although its intentions are unknown, the drone was traveling towards the warship," the post said, adding that the destroyer Carney was escorting two ships, one of which was delivering military equipment to the region. The statement said there were no injuries to American soldiers or property damage.

In October, a US warship destroyed four missiles and 15 drones fired by the Iran-linked Houthi movement, which controls parts of Yemen. The target of the attack was Israel.

The United States has increased its naval presence in the Middle East over the past month, including two aircraft carriers, escort ships and thousands of troops since October.
