Hamas releases two hostages, 10 more are expected to be released later

Israel's military said Wednesday night that Hamas -- the radical Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union -- has begun freeing 12 more hostages from the Gaza Strip on the sixth day of a ceasefire.

She said the first two hostages were flown from Gaza to Egypt, while another 10 were expected to be released soon.

This is the sixth release of Israeli hostages in accordance with a cease-fire agreement between Israel and Hamas.

In return, Israel is expected to release 30 Palestinian prisoners later tonight.

The ceasefire deal is expected to expire early Thursday morning. International mediators are working to extend it for a few more days to allow the release of other hostages.

Hamas took about 240 hostages on October 7 when it breached border barriers and swept into southern Israel, killing more than 1,200 people and sparking a devastating war.

It is believed that around 150 hostages are still being held by Hamas in Gaza.

More than 15,000 Palestinians have been hanged during Israel's air and ground offensive in Gaza, according to the Ministry of Health in Gaza, which is controlled by Hamas./ REL
