Friedrich Merz: We are witnessing the last days and weeks of the regime in Iran

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz predicted that the regime in Iran could be coming to an end amid massive anti-government protests in the country, which remains isolated from the rest of the world without internet access for more than 100 hours.

"If a regime can stay in power only through the use of violence, then it is essentially finished. I think we are currently perhaps witnessing the last days and weeks of this regime," he added.

The German chancellor had already condemned the actions of Iranian security forces against peaceful protesters, calling them "disproportionate" and "violent." The protests in Iran, the most serious in years, erupted on December 28 in Tehran in response to high inflation and a weak economy. They have now spread to other cities and taken a political turn, with riots and clashes between protesters and security forces.

Iranian authorities accuse the US and Israel of fomenting the unrest. Activists, for their part, complain that Iranian security forces are using violent tactics to confront protesters. The Oslo-based Iran Human Rights Organization (IHRNGO) has reported that at least 648 people have been killed since the protests began.

The country has also been disconnected from the internet since January 8 and has been in operation for 108 hours, the non-governmental organization Netblocks, a cybersecurity watchdog, told "X". /CNA
