After 47 years in exile, the son of the deposed Shah is becoming the center of international attention. When his father fled into exile in Egypt after the 1979 revolution in Iran, Reza Pahlavi trained as a fighter pilot in Texas.
Now, the 65-year-old exiled politician is seeking a new role and supporting the protest movement in his homeland. He is considered one of the Islamic Republic's most prominent opponents.
For the rulers in Tehran, he represents a provocation, fearing a regime change supported by outsiders, for example by the United States. In such a scenario, the former crown prince would be a prime candidate to take over.
A grim image of the Shah's era
"For many Iranians, he is a figure of hope, someone who remembers a future-oriented era under his father's rule, which ended with the 1979 revolution," journalist Moloud Hajizadeh tells DW in an interview. Hajizadeh has been arrested several times for her criticism of the repression of protest movements. She fled Iran in 2021 and now lives in Norway.
"I was born after the 1979 revolution and grew up in the Islamic Republic's education system," the journalist says. "In school, we were given a bleak picture of the Shah's era, characterized by oppression, corruption, and discrimination. But these are the very abuses we experience every day in Iran - and the situation has gotten worse."
Only a small privileged class benefits from the country's resources, while the majority of society lives in poverty. "These resources are squandered in the name of an ideology that has brought nothing to the Iranian people and has not pursued any development strategy," adds Moloud Hajizadeh.
Will the monarchy return?
Many Iranians who don't remember the period before 1979 think similarly. Some even accuse the previous generation of destroying their future with the revolution.
Bahareh Hedayat, a prominent Iranian feminist activist and political scientist, said in March 2025: "Many people want the monarchy to return. The path the Shah followed was the right one. And the current generation is following his dream."
In the eyes of many Iranians, the Shah is considered a patriot with grand plans. Between 1969 and 1979, Iran experienced an economic boom with annual real growth rates of between 8% and 11%. Furthermore, the education system and infrastructure were modernized, foundations that continue to characterize the country to this day.
Thirrja "As Gaza, as Libani, jetët tona për Iranin!" dëgjohet shpesh në lëvizjet protestuese.
Për mbështetësit e tij, Reza Pahlavi mbetet princi i kurorës i Iranit.
Ebadi believes that uniting opposition forces is crucial and emphasizes in an interview with DW: "Unity is the secret of our victory. Once we overcome our political differences, we can overthrow the regime together." Pahlavi also emphasizes the importance of a united opposition and the need to gain support not only from abroad, but also within Iran and from parts of the power apparatus.
According to their statements, more than 50,000 potential defectors have contacted his movement through its online platform. It remains to be seen how many of them are high-ranking representatives, for example from the clergy or the Revolutionary Guard.
Reza Pahlavi also emphasizes that the fight for change must come from within the country. In an interview with British broadcaster Times Radio on July 29, he declared: "The role of Iranians living abroad is to support local activists so that they can act at the right moment." /DW
