France is backing away from a commitment to stop dinghies and small boats attempting to cross the English Channel, a move that would be a blow to British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer's plan to stem the number of migrants arriving illegally in the UK.
According to sources for the BBC, the reason for the withdrawal is political turmoil in the French government and the plan to capture the dinghies is currently on hold. The Maritime Prefecture for the Channel also confirmed that the new plan was still being studied.
While French politics have clearly played a role in hindering the British government's efforts to slow the number of small boat crossings, legal and moral issues are also proving crucial. A major obstacle to banning dinghies at sea is the fear that it would lead to more deaths and prosecution of the security forces involved. /CNA
