Historic visit to the Vatican/ King Charles and Queen Camilla meet Pope Leo XIV

Britain's King Charles III and Queen Camilla arrived at the Vatican today for a historic visit to forge closer relations between the Church of England and the Catholic Church.

Charles, who is the titular head of the Church of England, arrived in St. Peter's Square which was almost empty of security forces.

The king and queen had a meeting with Pope Leo XIV, their first since his election in May.

The highlight of the visit was a noon prayer service in the Sistine Chapel that marks the first time since the Reformation that the heads of two Christian churches will pray together.

During the visit to Rome, Charles will officially receive a new title and recognition at a pontifical basilica that has strong and traditional ties to the Church of England, St. Paul's Outside the Walls. 

The king had long planned to visit the Vatican in 2025, even before the death of Pope Francis. /CNA
