The Louvre's security system had flaws and problems, the museum's director, Laurence de Carre, has said, confirming that she had submitted her resignation following the unprecedented jewelry theft on Wednesday, but it was not accepted.
De Carre gave explanations for several hours before a French Senate committee, where he admitted that they had failed to protect the precious jewels that were stolen.
De Carre also said the museum's video surveillance system was working, but acknowledged that coverage on the outside of the building is poor. She added that there are perimeter security cameras, but they are old and do not cover all of the Louvre's exterior walls.
Furthermore, the camera above the wing from which the jewels were stolen was pointed in the wrong direction and did not cover the balcony from which the perpetrators, who remain unidentified, entered.
Asked why none of her predecessors had raised concerns about video surveillance of the Louvre's exterior, De Carre avoided giving a direct answer. /CNA
