Sarkozy began his sentence yesterday/ Inside the former president's cell

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy began his five-year prison sentence on Tuesday, October 21. Sarkozy will serve his sentence at La Sante prison in Paris.

Sarkozy, who led the country between 2007 and 2012, was convicted in late September of criminal conspiracy over a plan for Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi to finance his election campaign. He becomes the first former French leader to be imprisoned since Nazi collaborator Marshal Philippe Pétain after World War II.

The former president will have to spend his time in his 9 square meter cell, which has a cooking stove, a small table and a shower with toilet. He will have access to a television (for a fee of 14 euros per month), a library and a gym.

Sarkozy has taken three books to his cell, which are the two volumes of "The Count of Monte Cristo" by Alexandre Dumas and the biography of Jesus Christ. The work by Dumas, which Sarkozy chose to take to the palace, carries a very strong symbolism. The main character, Edmond Dantes, is unjustly imprisoned for 14 years.

Dantes escapes from his cell and plans revenge on his opponents, only to return to post-Napoleonic France as the Count of Monte Cristo. Perhaps Sarkozy identifies himself with Edmond Dantes, since he has never admitted his guilt. On the way from his apartment to his cell, the former president declared yesterday that: an innocent man is being imprisoned.

As for the second book, “Jésus,” by Jean-Christian Petitfils, published in 2011, it offers a well-documented look at the life of Christ. Petitfils relies on historical sources and research to paint a portrait that is far from purely religious narratives./ CNA
