Juraj Cintula

A Slovak court today sentenced Juraj Cintula, the 72-year-old man who shot Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, to 21 years in prison for terrorism. Cintula's lawyer told reporters after the trial that they will appeal the decision to the Slovak Supreme Court.

In May 2024, Cintula, a poet and activist, shot the Slovak prime minister five times during a rally. Fico survived the attack after emergency surgery. At the time, Cintula told police that he had not intended to kill Fico, but only to injure him so that he would no longer serve as the country's leader. The 72-year-old disagreed with Fico's policy on Ukraine and other political issues.

He was initially charged with attempted murder, but prosecutors later raised terrorism charges. Cintula was facing 25 years in prison, but received a shorter sentence because of his age. Fico did not attend the trial himself and was represented by his lawyer. /CNA
