Following the spectacular robbery of jewels at the Louvre museum, France's justice minister said the country's security protocols failed to prevent the event and gave the country a terrible image.

"What is certain is that we have failed, given that people managed to lift the crane in the middle of Paris and within a few minutes take away priceless jewels ," Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin told the media in France.

Thieves with power tools forced their way into the world's most visited museum in broad daylight on Sunday, stealing eight priceless pieces of jewelry, and then fled on scooters.

The head of an organization specializing in finding and recovering stolen works of art warned that if the thieves are not caught within the next 24-48 hours, the stolen jewels, including a diamond and emerald necklace that Emperor Napoleon gave to his wife, are likely to be long gone.
