Louvre Museum remains closed/ Authorities: Security weak point, robbers are not

The historic Louvre Museum in Paris is remaining closed today.

Around 60 investigators are probing the crime, which is thought to have been orchestrated by a team of experienced robbers, suspected to be foreigners.

French police are searching for robbers who stole eight royal jewels from a museum.

In France, the robbery sparked a debate over the lack of security in the country's museums, which new Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez acknowledged on Sunday as a major weakness.

The robbery took place on Sunday shortly after the museum opened to the public at 9:00 a.m.

They used an extendable ladder to enter the Apollo Gallery, where the royal collection is housed, and cutting equipment to enter through a window and open the display cases.

A video of the robbery was broadcast on French news channels.

Masked thieves stole nine 19th-century jewels, one of which, Empress Eugénie's crown, fell and was damaged as they fled.

The list of stolen items included an emerald and diamond necklace that Napoleon gave to his wife, Empress Marie Louise.

Also stolen was a tiara that once belonged to Empress Eugénie, which has nearly 2,000 diamonds, and a necklace that once belonged to Marie-Amelie, the last queen of France. It has eight sapphires and 631 diamonds, according to the Louvre website./ CNA
