Kurti expresses willingness for Kosovo to house asylum seekers rejected by

Kosovo's acting Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, has expressed his country's willingness to host asylum seekers rejected by the United Kingdom, in exchange for support in the field of security.

Kurti, who is in London for the Berlin Process Summit, told the British daily newspaper The Times on Tuesday that "we want to help the United Kingdom."

"We see this as our friendly and political duty. We have limited capacities, but we want to help and, as we speak, there is regular communication between our teams of state officials from our Ministry of Internal Affairs and lawyers on how to make this process as smooth and beneficial as possible for both sides ," Kurti stressed.

He added that, in return, Kosovo would like to receive support in the field of security, whether through strategic agreements, or through equipment and projects.

"Of course, we want to benefit as a country, but we consider it, first and foremost, our duty to help you, because you have helped us a lot and we will never forget this," he underlined.

Kosovo has recently agreed to host 50 migrants from third countries who were staying in the US, while during October Kosovo was rumored as a possible place to host prisoners from Belgium.

In a similar agreement in 2022, Kosovo and Denmark agreed to lease 300 prison cells at the Correctional Institution in Gjilan, to house foreign prisoners who are expected to be deported from Denmark after completing their sentences.

In return, Kosovo will benefit from over 200 million euros, which will be invested in the Correctional Service and renewable energy projects.

The first prisoners from Denmark are expected to be transferred to the prison in Gjilan in the first half of 2027./ REL
