Climate change warms the country/ Mosquitoes appear in Iceland for the first

Mosquitoes have appeared in Iceland for the first time as global change has increased temperatures in the country. Iceland was until this month one of two places on the planet without mosquitoes. Now, only Antarctica remains.

Scientists have long predicted that mosquitoes could establish themselves in Iceland, as there are many breeding habitats, such as swamps and ponds. However, many species are unable to survive the country's harsh climate.

But Iceland is warming, at a rate four times faster than the rest of the Northern Hemisphere. Glaciers are melting, and as the planet warms, more species of mosquitoes have been found across the globe.

In the UK, eggs of the Egyptian mosquito (Aedes aegypti) have been found this year, and the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) has been detected in Kent. These are invasive species that can spread tropical diseases such as dengue, chikungunya and the Zika virus. /CNA
