Louvre Museum robbery/Paris prosecutor: Royal jewels worth 88 million euros

The Paris prosecutor has shared details from the investigations so far regarding the sensational robbery at the Louvre Museum.

According to prosecutor Laure Beccuau, the crown jewels have a value of 88 million euros, but that monetary valuation does not include their historical value for France.

The prosecutor, whose office is leading the investigation, said about 100 investigators are now involved in the police search for the suspects and the jewels, following Sunday's theft from the world's most visited museum.

"The criminals who took these precious stones would not have earned 88 million euros if they had had the very bad idea of ??dismantling these precious stones. Maybe we can hope that they will think about this and will not destroy these precious stones without reason," the prosecutor said in an interview with broadcaster 'RTL'.

Questions have been raised about the Louvre's security and whether security cameras may have failed, after thieves smashed a window, display cases and made off with Napoleonic gems on Sunday morning.

Eight objects were stolen, according to officials: a sapphire tiara, a necklace and a single earring from a similar set associated with 19th-century French queens Marie-Amelie and Hortense, an emerald necklace and earrings from a similar set belonging to Empress Marie-Louise, Napoleon Bonaparte's second wife, a relic brooch and tiara belonging to Empress Eugenie./CNA
