EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has said that criticism from the Trump administration and some Gulf officials that Europe has not done enough to support them throughout the war with Iran is unfair.

Kallas said in an interview with CNN that Europe did not create the situation in the region, yet it is doing "a lot," including providing air defense in the region, protecting the Red Sea, and supporting the Lebanese government.

She stressed that Gulf countries largely failed to support Europe when Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, saying this cannot be a one-way street.

"I think this is really unfair. Of course we can all do more, but the question is, we also have our own security theater in Europe. We have the Russian war. We haven't really seen the Gulf countries helping us there, and it can't just be a one-way street. So if we were in it together as our adversaries clearly are, then we would be much stronger ," Kallas said.

She further added that based on her conversations with Pakistani officials, the brokered ceasefire agreement should include Lebanon and called for an end to Israel's heavy bombing there.

"The response has been very harsh. I mean civilians killed. This is not acceptable at all. So if it is not covering the situation yet, then it should be covered now. It is clear that the ceasefire is fragile and we must do everything that it contains so that the parties can sit down and negotiate ," Kallas said. /CNA
