FBI warns: Iranian hackers could target US water and energy systems

The FBI and other US federal cybersecurity agencies sent an urgent warning that hackers with ties to Iran are suspected of targeting critical US infrastructure, including water, power systems and government facilities.

The warning states that the alleged hackers are linked to Iran, but did not specify how this determination was made, nor whether the hackers were part of a broader operation supported by the Iranian government.

The hackers are said to have caused the exploitation of multiple US organizations, including disrupting technology commonly used in drinking water facilities, wastewater systems and power plants, the advisory said. In some cases, this activity is alleged to have resulted in operational disruptions and financial losses.

Disruptions to water systems in particular could threaten the health of US residents, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. /CNA
