Greece makes decision/From January 1, 2027, no posting by children under 15 on

Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced a ban on access to social media for children under 15 from January 1, 2027.

Mitsotakis has stated that the regulation will enter into force in the summer of 2026 and Greece will be among the first countries to undertake this initiative.

Analyzing the reasoning behind the decision for this measure, which was broadcast as breaking news by major international media outlets, Mr. Mitsotakis said:

"I've talked to many parents in recent years, and they all tell me the same thing: that their child doesn't sleep well, gets stressed easily, is constantly on their phone. But I'm talking to many, many of you. Many children tell me that they are tired of the comparisons, of the comments, of the pressure to constantly be 'there'. The science is clear: when a child spends hours in front of a screen, the mind doesn't rest."

"Our goal is to push the EU in this direction," added Mitsotakis, who, addressing the children, said: "Now I'm sure they'll be angry with me. If I were your age, I'd probably feel the same way, but our role is not to be nice. But even if you don't agree, I just want you to think about it and discuss it with your friends. If something makes us feel stressed, worse or less good than we really are, then it's worth putting a brake on it. Our goal is not to distance you from technology, which can be a source of inspiration, knowledge and creation."

Explaining why the measure is being taken, Mitsotakis emphasizes that:

"The addiction to certain apps, the profit model that is based on your attention, how much time you spend in front of the mobile screen and deprives you of your innocence and freedom, has to stop somewhere."

Finally, addressing parents, the Prime Minister noted:

"No law can replace your presence. This policy is simply a tool to help you. I sincerely believe that in a few years we will all see it as something positive and self-evident."/ CNA
