"The cessation of fighting is a sign of hope"/ Pope Leo welcomes the US-Iran ceasefire

Pope Leo XIV today welcomed the announcement of a two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran. Pope Leo, who has been an outspoken critic of the war, also hailed the cessation of fighting as a "sign of hope."

"Only through a return to negotiations can the war be ended. I ask that this period of delicate diplomatic work be accompanied by prayer, in the hope that openness to dialogue can become the means to resolve other conflict situations throughout the world," he said in a speech at the Vatican today, according to Reuters.

This comes after the head of the Roman Catholic Church said yesterday that threats against the people of Iran are unacceptable, hours after US President Donald Trump warned Tehran that "an entire civilization could be destroyed." /CNA
