Erdogan hails Trump's efforts to end Gaza war

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday he appreciated Donald Trump's "efforts and leadership" to end the war in the Gaza Strip, after the US president secured Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's support for the US peace proposal.

Following talks between Trump and Netanyahu in Washington on Monday, the White House released a 20-point plan for Gaza.

The plan calls for an immediate ceasefire, the exchange of hostages held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel, Israel's phased withdrawal from Gaza, the disarmament of Hamas, and the establishment of a transitional government led by an international body.

It is not clear whether Hamas, the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union, will accept this agreement.

"I applaud the efforts and leadership of US President Donald Trump, which aim to stop the bloodshed in Gaza and achieve a ceasefire," said Erdogan, who last week met with Trump at the White House for the first time in six years.

Turkey will continue to contribute to this process with the aim of establishing a just, sustainable and acceptable peace for all parties, Erdogan wrote in X.

Turkey has been one of the most vocal critics of Israel's two-year war in Gaza, which it calls genocide.

It has suspended all trade with Israel, demanded international action against Netanyahu and his government, and made repeated calls for a two-state solution.

During the almost two years of war in Gaza, the Israeli offensive has killed over 65,000 Palestinians, according to health authorities in Gaza, caused extreme hunger, destroyed most buildings and displaced most of the population, in many cases several times.

The war began after a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel, in which militants killed about 1,200 people and kidnapped 251 others, according to Israeli officials .
