Oregon sues Trump administration over deployment of Guard troops to Portland

The National Guard is expected to be deployed to Portland, Oregon, to quell protests at immigration detention centers, as ordered by Trump. Defense Secretary Hegseth said yesterday that 200 troops will be deployed to the city over the next two months.

The lawsuit was filed yesterday by Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield, who called the action provocative and arbitrary and said it threatens to undermine public safety by inciting a public outcry.

Trump said this would help protect any of our besieged ICE facilities from attacks by Antifa and other domestic terrorists, characterizing the city as war-torn, in a post on Truth Social.

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Portland has been targeted by protesters since early June, leading to violent clashes.

As of September 8, the U.S. Attorney's Office had filed federal charges against 26 people for crimes including arson, assault on a police officer, and resisting arrest.

Last week, Trump signed an order officially designating Antifa as a domestic terrorist organization.

Legal experts have pointed out that there is no legal mechanism in the US that would formally designate any group as a domestic terrorist organization. “Such efforts could face constitutional challenges under the First Amendment, which protects freedom of speech and assembly,” the experts said.

Earlier this year, Trump deployed the National Guard to Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. Federal agents are expected to arrive in Memphis, Tennessee next week.

It is still unclear whether the president has legal grounds to deploy federal forces to Oregon./ CNA
