Parliamentary elections in Moldova/ Polls: Prime Minister Recean's party

In Moldova, polling stations have been open since morning, where citizens are voting in parliamentary elections that could determine whether the country will move away from its pro-Ukrainian stance and its plans to join the European Union, towards Russia's orbit.

On the eve of Sunday's vote, Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean warned of Russian interference, saying Moscow is spending hundreds of millions of euros as part of an alleged hybrid war to try to seize power, which he described as the final battle for the future of our country.

Russia has denied Moldova's claims that it has waged a disinformation campaign and seeks to buy votes and foment unrest.

On Sunday, polling stations opened at 7 a.m. Polls will close at 9 p.m., with results expected later in the day.

The vote will elect 101 members, followed by the president who will appoint a prime minister, generally from the main party or bloc, who can then try to form a new government.

Ahead of the election, most polls predicted Recean's pro-EU Action and Solidarity Party (PAS), which has led the country since 2021, to come out on top.

But the polls do not take into account Moldova's large diaspora, and about a third of voters remain undecided.

The pro-Russian Patriot Electoral Bloc, a group of political parties, has capitalized on voters' anxiety over economic turmoil, the slow pace of reforms and issues exacerbated by what officials call widespread disinformation.

Among the parties in the pro-Russian bloc are the Populist Party, which wants what it calls a balanced foreign policy between East and West, and the Alternative Bloc, which has claimed to be pro-European but critics have argued it seeks closer ties with Moscow. /CNA
