UN Security Council rejects Russian-Chinese resolution to extend sanctions on

The UN Security Council has rejected a resolution submitted by Iran's allies China and Russia to extend sanctions on Iran over Tehran's nuclear program.

The UN Security Council rejected a recent attempt by China and Russia to delay the reimposition of sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian called the decision unfair and illegal.

The resolution, submitted by Moscow and Beijing, which are Iran's closest allies among the council's 15 members, failed to secure the support of the nine countries needed to stop the series of planned UN sanctions, which are set to take effect on Saturday.

The vote ended with four votes in favor of the resolution, nine votes against and two abstentions.

"We hoped that European colleagues and the US would think twice and choose the path of diplomacy and dialogue instead of their blackmail, which simply results in escalating the situation in the region," said Dmitry Polyanskiy, Russia's deputy ambassador to the UN.

Pezeshkian, speaking to journalists and Iran experts on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly immediately after the vote, said that despite previous threats, Iran will not withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty like North Korea, which abandoned the treaty in 2003 and then built atomic weapons.

Barring a last-minute deal, the sanctions imposed by the United Kingdom, France and Germany will again freeze Iranian assets abroad, halt arms deals with Tehran and penalize any development of Iran's ballistic missile program.

The sanctions are designed to further strain the country's struggling economy and are aimed at pressuring Iran to the negotiating table. The move is expected to heighten already escalating tensions between Iran and the West./ CNA
