Patriarch Bartholomew leads the first patriarchal liturgy in the Church of

Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew presided on Sunday over the first patriarchal liturgy ever held at the historic Church of Saint George (Rotunda) in Thessaloniki.

"It is the first time that a serving Ecumenical Patriarch has presided over this historic church," Bartholomew said in his sermon.

Recalling the centuries-old history of the Rotunda, originally built under Emperor Galerius and later consecrated as a Christian church by Theodosius I, Bartholomew stated that despite its limited ecclesiastical use today as a UNESCO monument, it remains a sacred site.

Greek media report that the Patriarch pointed to its mosaics as evidence of the connection between Orthodox theology and early Christian art.

Furthermore, the Patriarch called Thessaloniki a spiritual beacon and a vibrant center of Orthodox faith, culture, and tradition. /CNA
