Iran sentences one of Israel's most important spies to death

Iran's Supreme Court has sentenced a man suspected of being one of the most important spies for Israel in Iran to death, in what was the 10th execution since the 12-day war in June with Israel and the United States, during which at least 1,100 people were killed.

The news was announced this morning by Mizan, the news agency of the Iranian judiciary, which reported that Bahman Choobiasl was executed because of his meeting with officials of the Israeli spy agency and that he had worked with Mossad on projects of great importance for communications.

"Mossad's main goal in withdrawing the defendant's cooperation was to obtain the database of government institutions and create a breach in Iranian data centers, along with which it also pursued other secondary goals, including investigating the import route of electronic devices," Mizan said.

Iran's Supreme Court rejected the defendant's appeal and confirmed the death sentence on charges of land corruption.

Choobiasl is the second person to be executed this month after Babak Shahbazi was hanged, also found guilty of spying for Israel.

However, activists disputed the claim and said that Shahbazi was tortured into a false confession after writing a letter to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy offering to fight in Kiev.

In response to the June war and protests in recent years over the state of the economy, women's rights and some calls for regime change, Iran has sentenced more people to death.

According to the Oslo-based group Iran Human Rights and the Washington-based Abdorrahman Boroumand Center for Human Rights in Iran, the number of people executed in 2025 was more than 1,000, but notes that the number could be higher as Tehran does not report every execution.

Meanwhile, Iranians fear more economic pain and a possible resumption of war with Israel. After nearly a decade, Iran is once again subject to United Nations sanctions, as the West increases pressure on Tehran, despite opposition from Russia and China.

Sanctions were automatically reinstated on Sunday after European signatories to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal called for the historic agreement to be reinstated to reactivate those sanctions./ CNA
