"We want elections!"/ Serbs express their demand during the protest in Belgrade

Tens of thousands of opponents of Serbia's populist President Aleksandar Vu?i? gathered in Belgrade on Saturday, supporting the demand for early parliamentary elections and declaring the government "illegitimate".

The protest was held after nearly eight months of ongoing demonstrations led by Serbia's university students, which have shaken Vucic's firm grip on power in the Balkan country.

The large crowd chanted "We want elections!" as it filled the capital's central Slavija Square and several blocks around it, with many unable to reach the meeting point due to traffic jams.

Tensions were high before and during the rally. Police were deployed around government buildings and near a camp of Vu?i? loyalists in central Belgrade.

"Elections are a clear way out of the social crisis caused by the government's actions, which are clearly against the interests of its people. Today, June 28, 2025, we declare the current authorities illegitimate," said one of the protesters. /CNA
