EU agricultural budget fraud scheme/ Greece announces cabinet changes

Greece's center-right New Democracy government announced cabinet changes on Saturday after a wave of resignations in a massive fraud scheme involving the EU's agricultural budget.

Thanos Plevris, a lawmaker from the nationalist Laos party, was named migration minister. He succeeds Makis Voridis, the top official who resigned on Friday after the European prosecutor implicated Greek ministers in a multimillion-euro fraud involving EU agricultural funds.

Other changes in the Greek prime minister's government include the appointments of Haris Theocharis as deputy foreign minister, Yiannis Andrianos as deputy minister for rural development and food, and Christos Dermentzopoulos as deputy minister for digital governance.

Opposition parties began to criticize Plevris's appointment.

The European Public Prosecutor's Office is pursuing dozens of cases in which Greeks received EU agricultural funds for pastures they did not own or rent, or for agricultural work they did not perform, thus depriving legitimate farmers of the funds they deserved. /CNA
