People in Japan are commemorating the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki today. The city honored the hundreds of thousands of victims at a ceremony on Saturday.

People held prayers across the city before the ceremony. Nagasaki fell silent at 11:02 a.m., the same minute the bomb exploded on August 9, 1945.

It is estimated that more than 70,000 people died by the end of that year. Many of them suffered injuries and are still dealing with the long-term effects of radiation.

An updated list of the names of the victims was placed at the memorial site. It includes the names of survivors who died in the past 12 months. The total now stands at 201,942 people.

Nagasaki Mayor Suzuki Shiro delivered a peace statement that acknowledged the troubled state of the world.

Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru said Japan will lead the international community's efforts to bring about a world without nuclear weapons.

"The reality and horrors of war, as well as the severity of the damage caused by atomic bombs, must never be allowed to fade. They must be inherited as a collective memory. The true understanding of this reality, what it is like to fall victim to an atomic bomb, must be cultivated across generations and nations. This is my decision," the prime minister said.

People in Nagasaki continue to reflect on what happened that day. Many want to convey the message that the atomic bombing that destroyed the city should be the last in the world. /CNA
