High temperatures risk reigniting major wildfires in France

Firefighters and local authorities said they were on high alert Friday, despite having managed to bring under control the biggest wildfire France has faced in decades, as high temperatures are forecast to reignite the blaze in the south.

In the past three days, the fire has spread to more than 160 square kilometers in the Aude region. One person has died and hundreds have been forced to flee their homes.

Due to hot and dry weather, the fire spread quickly with a perimeter reaching 90 kilometers, and local authorities said they must remain vigilant throughout the weekend, as temperatures are expected to reach over 30 degrees Celsius.

The regional administrator, Christian Pouget, said around 1,000 people have still not been able to return to their homes after the fire swept through 15 communes in the mountainous region of Krbiere, destroying or damaging at least 36 homes.

The fire injured 21 people, including 16 firefighters, local authorities said.

Around 1,300 homes are still without power due to damage to infrastructure, authorities in Aude said. Residents have been warned not to return home without authorization, as many roads remain blocked and dangerous.

Investigations have begun to understand how the fire broke out.

This is the largest fire that France has recorded in its database, created in 2006. But the French Minister for Ecology, Agnès Pannier-Runacher, said that this is the largest fire the country has recorded since 1949, linking the outbreak of the fire to climate change.

Southern Europe has faced many large fires this summer.

Scientists warn that climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of heat waves and droughts, making the region more susceptible to wildfires.

Last month, a huge fire that reached the southern port of Marseille, France's second largest city, left about 300 people injured./ REL
