Iran arrests 20 suspected of spying for Israel

Iran has arrested 20 people it suspects are operatives of Israel's spy agency, Mossad, in recent months, the Iranian judiciary announced on Saturday.

On Wednesday, Iran executed a nuclear scientist named Rouzbeh Vadi, who was convicted of spying for Israel and sharing data with another nuclear scientist killed during Israeli airstrikes on Iran in June, state media reported.

Judiciary spokesman Asghar Jahangiri told reporters in Tehran on Saturday that charges against some of the 20 detainees had been dropped and they had been released, but he did not say exactly how many.

"The judiciary will show no mercy to the spies and agents of the Zionist regime, and with strong decisions will make them an example for all," Jahangiri was quoted as saying by Iranian media.

He said full details will be released once the investigations are complete.

The execution of Iranians convicted of spying for Israel has increased significantly this year, with at least eight executions carried out in recent months.

Israel carried out 12 days of airstrikes on Iran in June, targeting top generals, nuclear scientists, nuclear facilities, as well as residential neighborhoods.

Iran responded with a barrage of missiles and drones at Israel.

The human rights group HRANA reported 1,190 Iranian casualties during the 12 days of Israeli attacks, including 436 civilians and 435 members of the security forces.

Israeli authorities said 28 people were killed in Israel during Iran's retaliatory attack./ REL
