The EU calls on parliamentary parties to respect the Constitutional Court's

The European Union on Friday called on parliamentary parties in Kosovo to accept the latest ruling of the Constitutional Court regarding the establishment of the new Assembly, saying that "there is no more time to waste" in this political impasse.

The Constitutional Court of Kosovo ordered the deputies of the Assembly of Kosovo to elect the new head of the legislative body through open voting and to complete the constitution of the Assembly within 30 days.

The EU described this Constitutional Court decision as an "important clarification", according to a statement from the EU Office in Kosovo.

She also called on parliamentary parties to find the "necessary compromises" and move quickly with the appointment of the Speaker and Deputy Speakers of the Assembly.

The decision was welcomed by parties that were in opposition last term, but was criticized by the election-winning party, the Vetëvendosje Movement.

Vetëvendosje called the decision arbitrary, the Democratic Party of Kosovo and the Democratic League of Kosovo called it a constitutional and democratic victory, while the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo spoke of the overthrow of the dictatorship.

According to the Constitutional Court's decision, a candidate cannot be put on the ballot more than three times.

Vetëvendosje has so far only proposed Albulena Haxhiu for the position of Speaker of the Assembly, while even after the Constitutional Court's preliminary ruling, it had argued that she could be elected through a secret ballot.

The Constitutional Court said that the presiding judge of the session, Avni Dehari, did not act based on the court's previous ruling of June 26, adding that all sessions held from June 27 to July 26 "are declared invalid."

She ordered the chair of the constitutive session to proceed with item 3 of the agenda of the constitutive session, approved on April 8, 2025, namely the appointment of the chairman through open voting.

Kosovo has plunged into a political crisis as a result of the failure to establish new institutions after the February 9 elections.

MPs have failed since April 15 to form a new Parliament - a necessary step for the formation of a new Government - as no party won the majority to govern alone.

The incumbent Prime Minister, Albin Kurti,'s Vetevendosje party won 48 seats and the other parliamentary parties have refused to vote for its candidate for Speaker of the Assembly, whose appointment requires at least 61 votes.

While Vetëvendosje insists that Albulena Haxhiu is a worthy candidate, some of the largest parliamentary parties, such as PDK, LDK and AAK, exclude her as "divisive"./ REL
