Amid record temperatures, wildfires erupt across Southern Europe

Southern Europe is facing several major wildfires this summer. Scientists warn that climate change is worsening the frequency and intensity of heat and drought, making the region more vulnerable to forest fires.

Spain, Greece and Turkey are all battling wildfires as a new heatwave brings record temperatures exceeding 42 degrees Celsius.

Firefighters today battled an active wildfire in the province of Avila, in central-western Spain. The blaze began on Friday afternoon, with the Spanish Military Emergency Unit (UME) working throughout the night to try to bring it under control and prevent it from reaching roads and train lines.

With temperatures reaching close to 39°C in parts of Spain and Portugal, the risk of fires is extremely high. The current period of extreme temperatures is expected to continue until at least next Wednesday, according to Spain's national weather service AEMET.

In Greece, a large fire broke out in Keratea, about 40 kilometers southeast of Athens, and continued to spread throughout eastern and southern Attica, causing significant damage.

The fires in the central Canakkale and Bayram?c? regions of western Turkey have been largely brought under control. The fire, which broke out near the village of Yigitler and spread through a forested area under strong winds, had prompted preliminary evacuations in the villages of Sacakli, Ahmetceli, Doganca, Zeytinli and Pitirelli.

This week, the UN's World Meteorological Organization (WMO) released a report detailing the impact of extreme heat around the world.

The report showed that extreme temperatures caused approximately 489,000 heat-related deaths each year between 2000 and 2019, with 36% occurring in Europe./CNA
