Britain expected to approve new Chinese 'super-embassy' in London

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to approve a new Chinese "super-embassy" in central London, despite a number of security concerns that were raised during the planning process.

Foreign media reported on Friday that intelligence services MI5 and MI6 are now satisfied that the project, long a source of controversy in the United Kingdom, should proceed, with some "temperament" to protect national security.

The 20,000 square meter building near the Tower of London is expected to be the largest embassy in Europe.

Beijing bought the space for £255 million in 2018, but objections have since been raised over its proximity to cables carrying communications to the City of London's vital financial district.

There are also concerns about Beijing's refusal to submit full internal planning plans to British authorities. /CNA
