Authorities in Switzerland are searching for two robbers who overpowered a security guard at a Roman-era museum in Lausanne and then committed the theft.

It is reported that the two robbers broke a display case and made off with dozens of gold coins that were on display inside the museum.

Lausanne police said the suspects had bought tickets and waited until other visitors had left shortly before closing time, before attacking and restraining the guard and then breaking the display case.

The monetary value of the stolen coins has not yet been revealed, but according to police, the coins also had archaeological value.

The theft comes at a time when gold prices have risen on global markets and a high-profile robbery of imperial jewels at the Louvre in Paris highlighted weaknesses and security shortcomings in museums in Europe./CNA
