Biden: At least 11 American citizens among the victims in Israel

US President Joe Biden said on Monday that at least 11 US citizens were among those killed in weekend attacks by the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas in Israel.

Washington believes it is likely that American citizens may be among those being held hostage by Hamas, it said in a statement.

President Biden said the United States is working with Israeli officials to obtain more information about the whereabouts of American citizens who are on the missing persons list.

"For US citizens currently in Israel, the State Department is providing consular assistance as well as updates on the security situation. For those wishing to leave, commercial flights and land routes are still available," he said, adding that they should take precautions and should follow the instructions of the local authorities.

Hamas gunmen crossed from the Gaza Strip into Israel on Saturday, killing Israeli soldiers, civilians and taking dozens of hostages. Israel responded with heavy bombardment of the Gaza Strip and is considering a broad ground offensive.

President Biden said he has directed his national security team to work with Israeli counterparts on every aspect of the hostage situation, including sharing intelligence and deploying US government experts.

Police departments across the United States have increased security around the centers of Jewish organizations, he added./ VOA
