The EU is ready to work with the new president of Montenegro

The European Union has expressed readiness to work with the newly elected president of Montenegro, Jakov Millatovic, expressing the belief that this country will remain committed to the European path.

At the same time, Brussels has called for political stability in this country in order to speed up the reform process and achieve progress in membership negotiations.

This is what EU spokesperson Peter Stano said today in Brussels, when he was asked about the results of the elections in Podgorica.

Kandidati për president të Malit të Zi, Jakov Millatoviç, ka fituar rreth 60 për qind të votave në rundin e dytë të zgjedhjeve presidenciale të dielën, kurse kundërkandidati i tij, presidenti aktual, Millo Gjukanoviç, ka marrë rreth 40 për qind, treguan rezultatet preliminare.

“BE-ja do t’i jap vlerësimet e veta zyrtare pasi të bëhet publik raporti i Misionit të BE-së për Vëzhgim të Zgjedhjeve”, tha Stano

“Në përgjithësi presim të bashkëpunojmë me presidentin e ri dhe me të gjithë partnerët politik në Podgoricë për t’i ndihmuar Malit të Zi të mbetet fuqishëm në rrugën e integrimeve evropiane... prioriteti duhet të jetë sundimi i ligjit dhe vazhdimi i reformave në drejtësi, ashtu siç është kërkuar nga raportet përkatëse të Komisionit Evropian", tha ai.

Analysts say it is still unclear whether Millatovic and his growing Europe Now party will continue to pursue pro-European Union policies.

They warn that the party's brand of populism could cause wobble in the face of difficult issues facing one of the continent's youngest democracies, including: political divisions over Serbian and Montenegrin identity, relations with Belgrade and the Serbian Orthodox Church, as and Russian influence in the region./REL
