Finnish conservative leader Petteri Orpo has won the election, defeating the center-left Prime Minister Sanna Marin.

Orpo secured 20.8% of the vote, ahead of the right-wing populist Party of Finland and the center-left.

This is a bitter loss for Sanna Marin although she continues to have high ratings in the polls.

Sanna Marin has been widely praised for her leadership of Finland and its entry into NATO and her country's management during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Shortly after the conservative leader declared victory, the center-left leader conceded the election.

Many Finns see him as a polarizing figure. She came under intense scrutiny last year when a video surfaced of her singing, dancing and drinking at a party.

The conservatives will have the first chance to form a government and if they succeed, Mr Orpo, 53, will become the next prime minister.

Under a government led by Orpo, Europe can expect a pro-European conservative from the liberal center of his party with an emphasis on economic policy.

According to Finland's proportional representation system, he will have to collect more than 100 seats in the 200-seat parliament to lead the country./ CNA.al
