Ukraine's top security agency notified a senior Orthodox priest on Saturday that he allegedly justified Russian aggression, seeking house arrest at a time of tension between the Ukrainian government and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
Metropolitan Pavel, the abbot of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra monastery – Ukraine's holiest Orthodox site – has challenged the Ukrainian authorities' order to release the property. Earlier in the week, he cursed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, threatening him with hell.
Metropolitan Pavel told the faithful on Wednesday that the monks would not leave and that they are awaiting the outcome of a lawsuit the Church has filed in a Kiev court over the matter.
The government claims the monks violated the lease agreement by making changes to the historic site and committing other technical violations. The monks opposed this claim, calling it a "pretext".
Many members of the Orthodox community in Ukraine have severed their ties with the KUO and switched to the rival Orthodox Church of Ukraine (KOU), which was formally recognized by the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople more than four years ago./ REL
